The Gothic

This semester examines the Gothic genre and its transition into a broader horror genre in the late 19thand early 20thcentury. The origins of the Gothic will be detailed and the state of the Gothic in the 20thand 21stcentury will be discussed. We will examine both literary devices and cultural origins.

Students will read primary texts within this genre including Wieland, or The TransformationThe Mysteries of Udolpho, Frankenstein, or a Modern Prometheus, Camilla, Dracula, The Yellowfins Sign, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Turn of the Screw, The Accursed Inhabitants of House Bly, The Haunting of Hill House, Psycho, Skin, It, and Broken Monsters.
