Super Basic English Grammar

Grammar WorkshopThis 4-week introductory course will use word classes as a point of departure. Usually, students are familiar with word classes, or at least the most important ones. The course will be focusing on the most important word classes ie. nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. This course will help students in identifying and using these word classes professionally and confidently; furthermore, the morphological, syntactical and semantical functions of the word classes will be our main focus. Interesting aspects of the word classes will be introduced during the sessions, and students will gain a vast knowledge of the aforementioned word classes. The students will also gain a contrastive knowledge in regards to differences and similarities between English and Danish. Lastly, the students will be able to view words in a completely different light.

Class Schedule:

April 6- Class 1

This week, the students will learn how to identify, understand and use nouns. In more detail, the students will learn about the noun’s morphological, syntactical and semantical functions. Additionally, the different types of nouns will be discussed; thereunder, common, collective and proper nouns. Lastly, the course will highlight how Danish varies from English, and what problems Danes face in regards to English grammar; this allows the students to gain linguistic and contrastive competences. This week, the students will engage in classroom exercises and group/individual work.

April 13- NO CLASS

April 20- Class 2

This week, the students will learn how to identify, understand and use verbs. In more detail, the students will learn about the verb’s morphological, syntactical and semantical functions; tense will briefly be mentioned. Additionally, the different types of verbs will be discussed; thereunder, lexical (full) and auxiliary verbs. In addition to that, we will discuss regular vs. irregular verbs. We will also discuss the do-periphrasis, and how this causes problems for Danes; this allows the students to gain linguistic and contrastive competences. This week, the students will engage in classroom exercises and group/individual work.

April 27- Class 3

This week, the students will learn how to identify, understand and use adjectives. In more detail, the students will learn about the adjective’s morphological, syntactical and semantical functions. Additionally, the different types of adjectives will be discussed; thereunder, the inflectional and syntactic type, but we will also discuss adjective comparison and its irregularities. Lastly, we will look at problems faced in regards to adjectives; this allows the students to gain linguistic and contrastive competences. This week, the students will engage in classroom exercises and group/individual work.

May 4- Class 4

This week, the students will learn how to identify, understand and use adverbs. In more detail, the students will learn about the adverb’s morphological, syntactical and semantical functions. Additionally, the different types of adverbs will be discussed ie. their forms, and adverb comparison. Lastly, we will look at problems faced in regards to adverbs; this allows the students to gain linguistic and contrastive competences. This week, the students will engage in classroom exercises and group/individual work.

Moreover, this last session will incorporate all the elements covered in the previous sessions.
